Now this is a shame. I was browsing through Facebook when I saw an article that indicated that my old friend Google+ is closing shop. The reason given was that since there was a recent data breach, they were going to close their doors. While I understand them discontinuing the service, I’m wondering about the reason given.
What I think really happened was the Google+ never actually took off. I’ve been using this website for years now and I’ve come to enjoy it. I won’t say I’m in love with it, but I will say that the audience on it is somewhat more mature than on other social networks, which is refreshing. I’ve even gotten to know some other users and when they find out this news, they’ll be heartbroken. So many people have put a lot of work into their networks and pages and to see all of that work wiped away is sad.
The data breach may have been the straw that broke the camel’s back. Since Google hasn’t invested in Google+, they may have just decided to close the entire think to make a clean break. I have been wondering why Google didn’t move full steam ahead with this social media alternative. It was slick, intuitive and it really could have been great. All they needed to do was build it out some more to give users more options. Oh well.
Do you have any thoughts on this? Do you use Google+?
